Can I download Files Using Torrents?

in General Site

No, there are no torrent files or torrent-related links on SoftArchive. One reason is that direct downloads via HTTP/HTTPS are much safer than using torrent networks.

In most countries, downloading is not illegal. For example, if you click a direct link to download an .mp3 file, your ISP sees nothing unusual. It could just be a background track playing on a website (via HTML5) loading the .mp3. Nothing illegal about that.

Torrents, however, are flagged by ISPs. Downloading may be fine, but uploading is often the issue. Torrents work as a peer-to-peer system, meaning you automatically share what you download with others. Sharing copyrighted material puts you at legal risk.

Also, BT does not just mean BitTorrent, but Bittorrent Tracker. Trackers log users by design - not to harm you, but because they need to keep a list of peers for sharing files. Your ISP can easily request this data.

For example, if a tracker has a torrent titled "Windows 8 Leaked Torrent x86!" your ISP could check if any IPs on that list belong to their customers. They might then send warnings or notices.

Torrents also use specific ports that are easy to monitor. Direct downloads happen via HTTP (port 80, like normal websites) or HTTPS (secure downloads, like banking/paypal), but torrent traffic runs on different ports, which makes it easy to trace.
